(What I Feed My Corgi, Levi)
Hi everyone! I’m Sophia, and I’m a proud Corgi mom to a three-year-old Tricolor Corgi named Levi. As Levi grows older, I’ve become even more mindful about his health, nutrition, and longevity. What we feed our dogs truly shapes their overall well-being from their coat and digestion to their energy and even mood. Over the years, I’ve learned that small, intentional changes to your dog’s meals can make a huge difference.
Whole Foods & Balanced Additions:
I wash and feed Levi a lot of whole, fresh foods. He gets plenty of steamed or boiled vegetables, and I even save the veggie water I boil them in. That water is full of nutrients, so I use it to hydrate his kibble since dry kibble alone can be very dehydrating. My favorite vegetables are broccoli, butternut squash, green beans, zucchini. Every once in a blue moon, I give him a raw carrot (not too much since they do contain a bit of sugar) and fresh roasted plain pumpkin straight from my oven.
One of Levi’s favorite toppers is unsalted, unseasoned sardines from Trader Joe’s. I always drain the can and add the sardines to his meal. They’re an amazing source of omega-3 fatty acids, which keep his skin healthy and his coat shiny.
Another staple I love adding is goat milk (you can find it in some grocery or pet stores). It’s packed with probiotics and helps with digestion, but be very mindful of how much to give since goat milk does have quite a bit of fat in them which can cause overweight if fed too much. For antioxidants, I mix in some organic berries — strawberries, blueberries and raspberries are Levi’s favorites.
Rotating Proteins:
One important thing I’ve learned is that dogs can actually develop allergies to their own food if they eat the same protein source for too long. They can also get bored! To prevent this, I rotate Levi’s proteins every few months. It keeps his meals interesting and that supports a stronger immune system and less allergies!
Our go-to kibble brand is Open Farm, and I’ve noticed a massive difference since switching. Their ingredients are traceable and ethically sourced — which is so important to me. Levi’s digestion improved significantly (no more stained butts from diarrhea!) and his fur has never looked better. They have oven-bake kibble, RawMix line, Freeze-dried options and many versions of Wet foods.
Raw & Ethically Sourced Meats:
Dogs are natural carnivores, so I also love incorporating raw feeding into Levi’s diet, but I’m very careful about where I source his raw meats from. I always ask our local butcher about their suppliers and make sure they come from reputable, ethical farms. Transparency matters — both for safety and for peace of mind.
Ingredients to Avoid:
In today’s pet food market, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by flashy labels and “premium” claims, but many foods still contain fillers and artificial ingredients that do more harm than good. Dogs don’t need corn, soy, or artificial preservatives, colors additives in their diets. Always check the ingredient list — the shorter and simpler, the better.
Healthy Treat Choices
For treats, I always choose single-ingredient options. One of my favorites is Wulfsnacks — their treats are 100% all natural and ethically sourced, there is NO preservative, additives or colorings, and Levi absolutely loves them. Whether it’s duck feet, salmon bites, or chicken feet from them, I know exactly what he’s eating.
Caring for Levi has taught me that dog nutrition doesn’t have to be complicated — it just needs to be intentional. Choosing high-quality ingredients, rotating proteins, and avoiding unnecessary fillers can truly extend your dog’s happiness and health. After all, they deserve the very best we can give them.
